Community Appraisal and Motivation Programme (CAMP) is a national non-profit and non-governmental organization established and registered in May 2002, under the Societies Act of 1860 (Registration No. 192/5/2946). We work with some of the most underprivileged communities in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan; responding to emergencies, improving access to quality health and education, creating livelihood opportunities and working closely with communities and government departments to promote human rights, peace and security.(Read more about CAMP)

HIV Prevention Programme for high risk youth, FATA

Pakistan is classified as a low prevalence, high risk country, with an adult HIV seroprevalence of 0.1%. (number of infected individuals divided by the total number in the population). However, within the highest risk group of injecting drug users this rate is a more alarming 16%. If Pakistan follows the Asian model the next stage will be spillover of HIV infection into other high risk groups (such as sex workers) and thereafter through the bridging populations (clients of sex workers, truck drivers and migrant workers) to the general population. In FATA to date there have been only 110 laboratory confirmed cases of HIV infection, with a further 40-50 unconfirmed cases, but these figures are unlikely to represent the full picture given the lack of testing facilities, the lack of awareness of the condition and the stigma associated with it. The youth (those aged 15-24 yrs) within any population are considered to be a high risk group and thus providing young people with the knowledge and skills necessary to reduce their risk is a priority. With the financial support of USAID through Research Triangle Institute (RTI) and Family Health International (FHI), CAMP implemented a pilot project of HIV / AIDS prevention from August 2008-August 2009. The Project was titled "Development and implementation of HIV prevention activities for high risk youth, including development of two life skill training centers for high risk youth". Besides setting up two life skills centers through which 9,608 high-risk youth were provided with education/information on Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), HIV/AIDS & general health, CAMP also distributed contraceptives to high-risk youth & community members with information on correct and consistent use. 181 high risk youth were referred to VCT Clinics for STI and HIV screening. 70 among the total referred were STI positive, and were given treatment & counseling. Although HIV remains a sensitive subject, the project successfully worked together with Agency Head Quarter Hospitals, local NGOs and government schools and colleges in Khyber and Mohmand Agencies.
