Saferworld Jirga Assessment Project

CAMP has recently signed contract with Saferworld and Conciliation Resources for 18 months Jirga Assessment Project. This will provide European Union (EU) institutions with analysis and practical programming recommendations based on the opinions and experiences of local people in a range of countries and regions affected by fragility and violent conflict.

The project is financed under the European Commission’s (EC) Crisis Response component of the Instrument for Stability (IfS). It will involve research and production of 18 country/regional analyses and communication of findings and recommendations in Brussels and in countries covered by the project.

This study will focus on 2 locations in Malakand division and look at how peace Jirgas can be used for conflict resolution, peacebuilding and restorative justice; and whether peace Jirgas can be further strengthened to resolve community and village-level conflicts to bring peace and stability in the Khyber Pukhtunkhwa. The study will also aim to identify how peace Jirgas could develop better relations between communities and security and justice service providers (i.e. police) to create safer and peaceful communities in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa.

Finally the study will provide a summary of perceptions of lessons learned and best practices from peace Jirgas for conflict resolution and peace building in KP with recommendations to help develop peace Jirgas in order to meet human rights and equality principles in a manner that is acceptable to local traditions and the culture of the Pakhtoon code of life
