School Rehabilitation and Community Infrastructure Project
With support from the Japanese Embassy Islamabad, CAMP initiated the ‘Schools Rehabilitation and Small Community Infrastructure Schemes Project’ in 20 villages of Mohmand Agency of FATA, in March 2010.
The one year project, funded under the Grants for Grassroots Funds Japan, aims to rehabilitate 20 Primary government schools, as well as develop small infrastructure schemes in the same villages.
School buildings in Mohmand Agency as in all of FATA, were in a dilapidated condition due to neglect and more recently the damage caused by the military operation. The buildings were ill equipped, unhygienic and lacked basic sanitation facilities. Water supply facilities were not provided inside the school premises in many areas. Most of the schools needed urgent maintenance and repair works such as electrification, paint/white wash, flooring, plastering, brickwork, boundary wall repairs etc. The project was modeled into two separate components
- School rehabilitation
- Small infrastructure schemes
The first component is complete and rehabilitation work has been wrapped up on 15 schools of Ghallanai, 4 of Prang Ghar and 1 of Ekka Ghund. Outside classroom renovation included maintenance and repair of School boundary wall, School gate, roof, veranda, flag stand, shade and plinth protection. Sanitation facility (usually not provided) has also been added to these 20 schools. Inside classroom work included renovation of ceilings, wall(s), flooring, wood work, steel work, windows, ventilators, doors, glasswork, electrification and remodeling the black board.
In the second component of the project, 5 large water tanks and 5 drainage systems have been completed. 30% work is complete on the remaining 11 water tank projects. 8 out of the 10 submersible water pumps have also been installed. The project staff organized meetings with CBO members to empower and strengthen the CBO so that they should be actively involved in the informal management, proper monitoring, revival and maintenance of the project schemes.
