Agreement signed with CBOs of Mohmand Agency for promotion of peace in the region

Mohmand Agency-FATA, 2nd July 2010: In order to initiate small scale community based advocacy oriented projects/activities in different areas of Khyber Agency, agreements were signed between 32 Community Based Organizations of Mohmand Agency and Community Appraisal & Motivation Programme (CAMP) in a ceremony organized at Peshawar.

The purpose of carrying out small scale projects through community based organizations (CBOs) is to strengthen their capacity and promote grass-roots level initiatives directed towards promoting peace, good governance, promoting democracy and human rights within the un-privileged and poverty stricken communities of Mohmand Agency, FATA.

These CBOs were selected under CAMP’s project “COMMUNITIES FOR CHANGE: Laying the grassroots foundation for Political Reform in FATA” being funded by the Embassy of Federal Republic of Germany, Islamabad. Before launching this grass-roots advocacy oriented small-scale project, CAMP ran a series of training programmes for enhancing the capacity of these CBOs in 2009-2010 in various thematic areas. Mr. Asad Ali& Dr. Imran Naseem, CAMP senior staff, CAMP’s local staff of Mohmand, and representatives of 32 CBOs of Mohmand Agency were present at the occasion. Few more organizations of Mohmand Agency have been short-listed and will be provided with the same support in the weeks to come.

Under the programme of supporting small scale projects, these CBOs will be raising awareness in their respective tribal communities on the issues of education, health, discouraging drugs use, preventing aerial firing, poor law and order situation, negative impact of FCR, inter-tribal conflicts, girls education, promoting human rights, political education, education on peace, etc through various activities such as hujra/corner meetings, dialogues, seminars, debate contests, press conferences, formation of youth committees, publishing information material, peace walks, sports competitions etc.

At the end of the ceremony grants cheques were distributed among the 32 CBOs’ representatives. The representatives of CBOs appreciated the practical support and active role of CAMP in not only spreading awareness at the grass-root level but also mobilizing them to resolve their local issues at local levels through local solutions.
