Lack of coordinated efforts between government and civil society organizations leads to the growing menace of women trafficking in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Peshawar, June 24, 2010: Participants termed lack of coordinated efforts among government departments and civil society organizations, and dearth of relevant laws & policies, as the leading factors towards the growing menace of women trafficking in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in a half day consultative meeting organized by Community Appraisal & Motivation Programme(CAMP) regarding the inter institutional referral system (IRS) The meeting was attended by members from NGOs, media, law enforcement agencies, directorate of human rights, federal & provincial women crises centers and lawyers community. The event was sponsored by UNDP and DFID under its gender justice and protection program (GJP).
Addressing the session project coordinator (CAMP) , Combating Women Trafficking Mr. Said Afzal Shinwari said that the sole purpose of establishing the inter institutional referral system (IRS) is to counter the issue at Provincial level and to promote and strengthen an effective referral system between the government and civil society organizations for countering women trafficking in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa .He said that so far from the IRS platform 25 victims have been provided with free legal support,50 cases have been reported on different media channels and newspapers and dozens have been referred to government and private shelter homes.
The group also lamented inadequate social support for the victims, lack of coordinated efforts among government and civil society, weak implementation of the relevant laws and meager legal services for the victim at government’s disposal.
The IRS also recommended capacity building of the law enforcement agencies, data entry registers of the victims in police stations, formation of legal panels and free toll number system for quick and efficient flow of information.
