Two-Day National Consultation on “Possibilities and Opportunities for Legal Pluralism in Pakistan”

1401408_901490796566217_7449322769670747148_oA two-day National Consultation on “Possibilities and Opportunities for Legal Pluralism in Pakistan” was organised by Ministry of Human Rights, Government of Pakistan in collaboration with Community Appraisal and Motivation Programme (CAMP) on 17-18 December, at Islamabad.

Relevant federal and provincial government departments and civil society including representatives from NGOs, UN agencies, lawyers, media and others took part in this two-day consultation.

Minister of State and Special Advisor to Prime Minister on Human Rights, Barrister Zafarullah Khan was the Chief Guest at the event. The inaugural session was also attended by the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany Her Excellency Ina Lepel and Joint Secretary, Ministry of Human Rights Ms. Humera Azam Khan.

The key speakers included Mr. Naveed Ahmad Shinwari Founding CEO of CAMP; Dr. Farzana Bari, Director Gender Studies Department at Quaid-e Azam University; Prof. Farkhanda Aurangzeb, Director Resource Mobilisation and Coordination, Aurat Foundation; Mr. Zia Ahmed Awan, eminent human rights activist; Ms. Benazir Jatoi, Manager Law and Governance at Aurat Foundation and Mr. Shakil Durrani, Former Chief Secretary KP.

On the second day, Ms. Khawar Mumtaz, Chairperson NCSW chaired the meeting. There was an invigorating debate on the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 2015 and the Criminal Law (Prohibition of Jirga/Panchayat Amendment) Act 2015. Recommendations from the participants will be shared with the Ministry of Human Rights and other relevant stakeholders.
